Anduril’s Lattice operating system has been running border surveillance since 2022. Version 4.2, paired with the Mark III Sentry Tower, is the most capable autonomous detection platform we’ve tested. It is also the most troubling.
THE HARDWARE:
The Mark III towers are solar-powered, self-deploying, and designed for permanent installation without foundations. The sensor array fuses LIDAR, thermal imaging, RF detection, acoustic sensors, and multiple visual cameras into a single classification pipeline. In testing, it correctly identified and classified a human figure at 2.8 km in complete darkness in under half a second.
The towers communicate via mesh networking. Each tower extends the detection radius of its neighbors. A line of twelve towers creates a continuous awareness zone with no gaps and no blind spots. The system never sleeps, never takes breaks, never looks at its phone.
THE SOFTWARE:
Lattice v4.2 introduces what Anduril calls “autonomous response chains” — pre-configured action sequences triggered by detection events. In border deployment, a detection triggers: alert to nearest CBP station, drone launch for visual confirmation, Sentinel vehicle dispatch, and corridor prediction (where is the person heading, and which intercept point minimizes response time).
The phrase “human in the loop” appears seventeen times in Anduril’s documentation. It does not appear in the system’s operational logs. The detection-to-dispatch sequence runs without human approval. A human reviews after the fact.
THE CONTRACTS:
Anduril holds $250 million in active CBP contracts. The Mark III deployment covers the southern border from San Diego to Brownsville — 1,954 miles of autonomous surveillance. Additional installations protect “critical infrastructure” in twelve states. DHS has not disclosed which infrastructure or which states.
Palmer Luckey, Anduril’s founder, once built virtual reality headsets for gamers. Now he builds autonomous sentry systems for governments. When asked about the transition, he said: “Defense is the killer app for AI. Everything else is a toy.”
THE CONCERN:
The Mark III cannot be seen from ground level. It looks like a cell tower. It sounds like nothing. The people it detects have no way to know they’ve been detected, classified, and dispatched against. By the time a Sentinel Edition arrives, the system has been tracking them for twenty minutes.

VERDICT:
As a detection platform, Lattice is extraordinary. Sensor fusion, mesh networking, and classification speed are best-in-class. As a system deployed against human beings with no meaningful human oversight, it raises questions that a product review cannot answer.
The fifth star depends on whether you think autonomous surveillance at this scale is a feature or a condition.
