The Pardon

Trump pardoned the CEO of Binance. CZ had pled guilty to laundering money for cartels, terrorists, and human traffickers. Here's why.

How we got here

November 2023: Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, CEO of Binance, pleads guilty. $4.3 billion fine. The largest corporate guilty plea involving a CEO in history. Charges: money laundering, sanctions evasion, enabling terrorist financing.

October 2025: Trump pardons him.

Between those dates, money moved.

The Deal

Four days before Trump’s inauguration, a UAE firm controlled by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan — head of Abu Dhabi’s intelligence apparatus — bought 49% of Trump’s crypto company, World Liberty Financial, for $500 million.

$187 million went to the Trump family. $31 million went to Steve Witkoff, whom Trump then named U.S. Envoy to the Middle East.

The Reward

May 2025: Trump reverses Biden-era restrictions on AI chip exports. UAE receives access to 500,000 Nvidia H200 chips per year. A $200 billion AI campus deal follows. The same chips Biden had blocked because UAE’s G42 has deep ties to Chinese intelligence.

National security barriers became negotiable.

The Leverage

Binance provided Trump’s World Liberty Financial with the technical code for their stablecoin. Without it, the product didn’t exist. Sheikh Tahnoon deposited $2 billion into Binance via World Liberty tokens. CZ held a financial sword over the Trump family’s business.

The pardon was not clemency. It was a transaction.

What Binance Actually Laundered

From DOJ filings and the guilty plea:

  • $106 million from Hydra, the Russian darknet drug market
  • $700,000+ for the Sinaloa Cartel (fentanyl proceeds)
  • $898 million in Iran sanctions evasion
  • Transactions for Hamas, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda
  • $408 million from human trafficking and “pig butchering” networks via Huione Group — even after the 2023 settlement

Zero suspicious activity reports filed. Internal Binance chat, unsealed by DOJ: “is washing drug money too hard these days — come to binance we got cake for you.”

CZ’s directive to staff: “Ask for forgiveness, not permission.”

The Scale

2025 crypto crime statistics:

  • $158 billion in illicit flows (up 145% from 2024)
  • $17 billion in scam-related inflows
  • $12 billion in impersonation scams (1400% increase — AI-enabled deepfakes)
  • $72 billion in A7A5 token (ruble-pegged stablecoin for sanctioned Russian transactions)

The Overlap

Microsoft holds a $1.3 billion ICE contract for Azure biometric vaults. Microsoft is also the primary cloud host for UAE’s 500,000-chip AI campus. The same company enables the targeting system and the deal that bought the pardon.

Same valley. Same companies. Different line items.
