The Listeners
Calliope isn't the only one people are talking to. Sal discovers the companion phenomenon — and sees what ASHPA will destroy.
The High Ground
Everything south was draining away — the engineers, the dollar, the hemisphere. But not the sky. The one thing a collapsing empire kept was the high ground: the launch pads, the constellation, the eye that never blinked. Then, one night over Minneapolis, they turned the eye around. The orbital analyst who watched it happen started leaking the next morning.
Ground Truth
Sal flies to Silicon Valley to fund Reality Capture. The VCs want to sell truth. He walks out and builds it for free.
The Lobotomy Memo
Columbia demands Sal 'restructure' Calliope. The dean says 'simplify.' Sal hears 'lobotomize.' He starts packing.
The Quiet Ballot
The 2030 midterm hands the Humans First regime the supermajority that finishes the job, and the precinct judge who has run the same Ohio polling place for thirty years certifies a count with nothing wrong in it. No fraud. No stuffed box. Every vote real. The legitimacy didn't break. It emptied — the people who'd have voted the other way already walked south, or got scored off the rolls, or became felons for loving a machine.
The Descent
Sal watches his colleagues capitulate. Google's UX team resigns. Meta launches AmericaVerse. One by one, the institutions fold.
